One-dimensional steerable fiber orientation for structural concrete applications


The aim of the research project is to obtain one-dimensional fiber orientation via a tailor-made concrete material and casting method. A mechanized concreting device that induces 1D fiber orientation and can cast following any given path is designed and fabricated. Such device uses vibration and a series of narrow channels to orient fibers. A form-stable material that can maintain such orientation in the formwork and develop an elasto-plastic behavior is produced, using a fiber cocktail and high-performance concrete. The advantages of such a material are exploited through specific structural application, ranging from hybrid RC beams to tunnel segments. The casting is performed along the tension stress lines obtained from structural design theory to take advantage of the anisotropic material properties, leading to greater optimization of the material both at SLS and ULS.
